Asset Depletion Period for Social Assistance in Rotterdam: how long must you wait?

Does your assets exceed the social assistance limit in Rotterdam? Then the municipality activates a depletion period. This article explains how long you will not receive social assistance, how Rotterdam calculates the period and which local conditions apply.

What does the depletion period in Rotterdam entail?

In Rotterdam, just like elsewhere in the Netherlands, if your assets are above the social assistance limit, you must first draw on your savings or possessions. The maximum period is two years (24 months), depending on the degree of exceedance. During this period, the Municipality of Rotterdam does not pay full social assistance, to promote self-reliance and prevent abuse.

Calculation according to Rotterdam practice

  • Minor exceedance: Period from 1 month, specifically for small amounts above the limit of €7,575 (singles, 2024).
  • Larger exceedances: Up to 24 months, calculated with the formula: (excess - exemption) / monthly social assistance norm. Rotterdam applies strict checks via the work plaza.
  • Exceptions in Rotterdam: In case of illness or work disability, the period may be suspended; contact the Rotterdam Social Domain for medical statements.

After the end of the period, you can reapply for social assistance with the Municipality of Rotterdam. Proof of expenditure is not mandatory, but the municipality checks transactions, such as the sale of non-exempt cars or second homes. Rotterdam encourages this with programs such as 'From Work to Work' for rapid reintegration.
