Rotterdam expats and retirees have access to social security treaties that the Netherlands has concluded with more than 45 countries, such as the US, Australia, Israel and Turkey – a popular destination for many Rotterdammers with maritime ties. In these treaty countries, you receive your AOW pension without the need for voluntary insurance, as long as you meet the residence or employment conditions. The SVB pays it out monthly to a Dutch account or a local bank account in Rotterdam or elsewhere, including a supplement for households with low incomes, taking into account the relatively high cost of living in the port city. No treaty country? After 15 years of emigration, your AOW benefit is halved. In the case of double pensions, set-off is applied. Apply via the SVB form 'Apply for pension', with annual proof-of-life check, easily arranged via the Rotterdam municipal archive or online. Tax burden: often 2% Dutch levy, plus local rates in Rotterdam or abroad. Upon death, the benefit passes to survivors under the Anw scheme. Tip for Rotterdammers: check the treaty status on government.nl and consult the Juridisch Loket in Rotterdam for free advice. Disputes are resolved via the SGB procedure. These treaties facilitate pensions for Rotterdam expats in the international port world and prevent double premium payments.
