Export child benefit in Rotterdam: rules and conditions

Export child benefit means that as a Rotterdam citizen you can receive child benefit for your children, even when residing abroad. This scheme, established by the Dutch government and EU agreements, applies to parents from Rotterdam who, for example, are expats but leave their child(ren) in the Netherlands or where foreign child benefit is lower.

What does export child benefit entail?

Export child benefit allows you to receive benefit from the Netherlands, even with foreign residence. Relevant for Rotterdam parents in:

  • Residing abroad while leaving children in Rotterdam.
  • Expat parents working abroad with children with ex-partner in the Netherlands.
  • Residence in a country with lower child benefit.
Based on the Child Benefit Act (WK) and Export Child Benefit Regulation.

  • EU coordination agreement on social security.
Civil Code (art. 1:301, 1:302) determines parental obligation. In disputes: Rotterdam District Court, Wilhelminaplein 100-125.

Conditions for export child benefit

Essential requirements:

1. Nationality and residence

  • Dutch national.
  • Centre of vital interests abroad (work, family).
No export if centre is in Rotterdam.

2. Child in the Netherlands

Children must:

  • Have ordinary residence in the Netherlands, e.g. Rotterdam (BSN, address).
  • Have no or lower benefit in your country of residence.

3. Unique benefit

Amount of export child benefit

Equal to Dutch standard, adjusted for:

  • Age.
  • Disability or chronic condition.

Application procedure Rotterdam
